HTML vs CMS: Which Website Is Right for Your Business?

Most small business websites are built one of two ways: on a content management system such as WordPress, or as a custom-coded HTML site. Neither is universally 'better' — they suit different situations.

A custom HTML site tends to load faster, since there's no underlying platform to process on every visit. It's also less exposed to the plugin and platform vulnerabilities that affect CMS sites, and because there's less moving under the hood, there's less to break during routine maintenance.

A CMS platform earns its place when a business needs to make frequent content changes itself, run a blog with regular new posts, or needs a large ecosystem of plugins for specific functionality.

For most small and medium business websites — a handful of pages, a clear service offering, a contact or enquiry form — a custom HTML build gives strong performance and low long-term maintenance without the overhead a CMS brings.

The right choice depends on how the site will be used day to day, not on which option sounds more modern. That's worth discussing before committing to either.
